Riesa (pps) After completion of the first round at the 2002 Women’s World Volleyball Championship in Germany, three of the four World champions since 1952 are still in contention: Russia/USSR (1952, 1956, 1960, 1970, 1990), Cuba (1978, 1994, 1998) and China (1982, 1986). Only three-time World champion Japan (1962, 1967, 1974) was forced to return home after finishing fourth in first-round Pool A at Muenster.

| 09/03/2002: Bulgaria vs Italy: Clear victory for Italy |
| In an unexciting match Italy defeated Bulgaria in straight sets (25:18, 25:16, 25:19) thus emerging as winner in Pool A. The games showed clearly that both teams had already qualified for the second round. After the first set both coaches rested their first six, but the two second teams showed a spirited game. | 09/02/2002: Italy vs Germany: Italy had to fight for straight win |
| Italy was forced to fight for their victory over Germany in straight sets (25:18, 31:29, 25:22). The Italians dominated the game in the first set, but then the crowds whipped the host team on to achieve a 21-21 after being 16-10 down. The 5,200 spectators followed the dramatic second set standing: Germany conceded two match points, Italy needed no fewer than five match points to finally win the set 31-29. | 09/01/2002: Czech. Republic vs Italy: Italy wins again 3:0 |
Experienced Italy overpowered the Czech Republic 3-0 (25:18, 25:21, 25:22)in their third World Championship match remaining undefeated. The Czechs could only counter the hard Italian attacks at a few stages. In the decisive moments, the southern Europeans played highly concentrated thus never endangering their win.
Italy will play Germany on Monday at 20.20 hrs, while the Czechs meet Japan at 13:00 hrs.

| 08/31/2002: Italy - Mexico: Clear, straight win for Italy |
1st set
The favourites from Italy only slowly got into their game and were even down to Mexico at the beginning. But then the Europeans showed their attacking power. In spite of the Mexicans showing a spirited performance, Italy gained the lead and defended it to win the set 25-17.
2nd set

| 08/31/2002: Münster: Can the German team make the next step to the second round? |
After the thrilling 3:2 over the Czech Republic in the opening match the German team today plays against Japan. The WDR broadcastes this game live (15.00).

| 08/30/2002: Italy, Brazil and Netherlands first winner of the opening day! |
European number two Italy made a tremendous start of the 2002 Women’s Volleyball World Championship here in Germany, defeating Japan in straight sets to open the tournament with a flourish. Brazil and The Netherlands also won their opening matches in the preliminary round.
