population & structure |
As the capital of Westphalia, Münster is the science and service location for 1.5 million people. Important control centres of business, administration, research, culture and social life have settled in Münster. This is a progress which has its roots in the tradition of the city which has remained young, despite its 1200 years of history. It is this which characterises this university city, also known as a bicycle metropolis, with its 280.00 inhabitants and 55,000 students.
The international Münster-Osnabrück Airport (FMO) has developed into an international airport which is of major importance for the region. Münster´s Inter-City railway station, one of the main arteries connecting the North with the South, is just a short walk from the city centre. |

location & history |
Traces of the 1200 years of Münster`s history can be seen and experienced everywhere. The cathedral city had its origins in the 7th Century. In 1648, an important chapter in world history was written in Münster. The treaty of Westphalia brought the Thirty Years War to an end and Münster was godparent to the idea of a unified Europe.
Today, the city profile is characterised by high-tech and local crafts, baroque stately homes and bold architecture, a historical city centre and an urban planning which points the way. These should not be seen as contrasts, but as facets of a lively, young city with an innovative spirit which has its roots in tradition. |

Münster is a first-class location for large sporting events. This has been proven by the World Ladies Basketball Championships in 1998 and the classic cycling race between Groningen and Münster, the German Championships in show jumping, trampoline jumping and Rock and Roll.

sightseeing |
In Münster, the transition from the gables of the past to modern forms, from tradition to innovation is smooth. The appearance of the city has been preserved thanks to the careful reconstruction of the historic old town surrounding the Prinzipalmarkt after World War II.
St. Paul's cathedral is the focal point of the city. Only a few steps from the cathedral is the city's main street, Prinzipalmarkt. Its narrow houses with their steep gables and arcades set the scene for one of Europe's most beautiful medieval cities.
And of course no stay in Münster would be complete without a visit to Aasee lake with the Mühlenhof open-air museum, the year-round zoo with its Delphinarium and the Westphalian Museum of Natural History with its planetarium. |
