sport & culture |
As a city of sport, Leipzig can look back on a proud tradition, going back to the 19th century. Leipzig was regarded as being "Germany’s City of Gymnastics". The German Football Association was founded in 1900 in Leipzig.
In addition, football, cycling and water sports have played an important role. The Volleyball Association Leipzig has become a local hero with over 1.000 fans attending every match and in the last season they qualified for the "play off" in the German league. A modern multi-purpose sporting complex is being built for 82 million DM at a central location in the city. Those multi-functional sport halls will accommodate up to 7.000 people. The main hall will be the competition hall for the Volleyball World Championship 2002. |
